Dr. Linden explains a diagram of healthy and unhealthy gums and explains the consequences of uncontrolled gum disease, including systemic illnesses, tooth loss, infection in the mouth, drifting of teeth. Systemic diseases include heart attack, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, kidney disease, pre-term birth, diabetes, stroke, and Alzheimer’s, and more. Dr. Linden explains that the bacteria that cause gum disease are very similar to those that accumulate in the coronary valves and arteries. Dr. Linden advises against monitoring this oneself. Instead, he advises seeing ones dentist or periodontist, getting a comprehensive exam and thorough diagnosis, including a set of digital x-rays. Then an appropriate course of treatment can be prescribed. In 85% of patients, who might once have undergone conventional surgery, the laser protocol is appropriate. Often, people are referred to their periodontist by their general dentist, but with greater public awareness of LANAP, more and more people are going directly to a periodontist. In terms of prevention, Dr. Linden advises brushing, flossing, good oral hygiene, and regular visits to your dentist.
