Dr. Linden is interviewed by Dr. Derrick Desilva, discussing gum disease, its consequences, and its treatment through laser periodontal surgery (LANAP). Dr. Linden explains a diagram of healthy and unhealthy gums and explains the consequences of uncontrolled gum disease, including systemic illnesses, tooth loss, infection in the mouth, drifting of teeth. Systemic diseases include heart attack, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, kidney disease, pre-term birth, diabetes, stroke, and Alzheimer’s, and more. Dr. Linden explains that the bacteria that cause gum disease are very similar to those that accumulate in the coronary valves and arteries. Dr. Linden advises against monitoring this oneself. Instead, he advises seeing ones dentist or periodontist, getting a comprehensive exam and thorough diagnosis, including a set of digital x-rays. Then an appropriate course of treatment can be prescribed. In 85% of patients, who might once have undergone conventional surgery, the laser protocol is appropriate. Dr Roger Briggs in Scottsdale Arizona discusses growing research evidence that links gum disease to other health problem. New research suggests a link from gum disease to colon cancer and cardiovascular disease. Gum disease may also dramatically effect how long it takes a woman to become pregnant. Despite the proven connection between periodontal disease and overall physical health, many people remain unaware of the specific relationships between poor oral hygiene habits and serious illness. Because gum tissue is highly vascular — that is, heavily supplied with blood vessels — it is a prime entry point for oral bacteria to reach the body’s circulatory system. Poor oral care leads to the build up of plaque and calculus (tartar), which contributes not only to oral diseases like tooth decay and gum disease, but also to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, uncontrolled diabetes and preterm births, as well as added complications for anyone with a weakened immune system. Researchers have found oral bacteria in the vessels of heart attack and stroke patients, thereby confirming the link with tooth decay and gum disease. In addition, research has shown that patients with gum disease are nearly twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those with healthy gum tissue. www.briggsfamilydentistry.com
